Dotterel on the doorstep

Dotterel on the doorstep this morning!

An early morning call from local birdwatcher, Peter Alderson, had us dashing out into our “back garden” the Great Orme. Peter had relocated a juvenile Dotterel that had been seen briefly the day before. Many birders had searched the headland for this rare visitor but no sign and we all assumed that the bird had been a brief visitor.

We quickly made our way up the hill on the limestone pavement area to the cairn where the Dotterel had been seen. We arrived just in time to see this wader walk over the ridge out of sight! Luckily this most lovely bird soon came back up the slope and allowed us amazing views, whew!

This juvenile bird was finding plenty of food, in typical plover style the bird would walk forward, stop, listening, then tip forward to pull a grub or worm from the short grass. The Dotterel’s plumage was in prestine condition with lovely pale edges to the feathers, so typical of a young bird.

A wonderful encounter with an enchanting bird! First day of September, one of the most exciting months for birdwatching, and what a start?

As we headed back to the car we watched a pair of Chough feeding near the cliff edge, as we admired these lovely corvids six more flew over calling loudly.

A family of Stonechats were feeding on the slope, here the male.
