A Guided Walk At RSPB Conwy In The Drizzle 15 November 2021

Join a morning walk with us at RSPB Conwy and enjoy a lot of birds and beautiful scenery.
We met Derek and Yvonne at RSPB Conwy car park at 9.30am on the 15th of November 2021 a rather gloomy grey morning. The gloom was immediately lifted by the appearance of a gang of Long-tailed Tits in the birch trees right by the parked cars. Derek and Yvonne are fairly new to bird watching and Yvonne was having trouble focusing her binoculars, after a few minutes trial and error everything was crystal clear and we set off to see what birds were on the reserve.

What a lovely bird to start our morning walk with - Long-tailed Tit.
We were soon all watching a Water Rail what a fantastic start to the guided walk! These often shy birds are usually pretty hard to see but this one was in clear view. The rail allowed prolonged views feeding in the open near a reed bed but mostly fully visible and we soaked up these wonderful views.
Moving on the boardwalk a Cetti’s Warbler exploded into song, as only they can, and then amazingly flew across the path in front of us, a brief view for sure but any view of a Cetti’s Warbler is a good view so elusive usually. Suddenly birds were flying out of the trees on the left of the board walk including a flock of Redwings and a gang of Siskins, Alan commented that a Sparrowhawk might be about and no sooner said a Sparrowhawk shot out the trees and away over our heads – wow!
From the screen viewpoint off the boardwalk we had another amazing encounter with a Water Rail. This beautiful bird was feeding at the base of the reeds just to our right so close we could take video on a handheld mobile phone! An extraordinary view of this so often shy bird and we soaked up ever feather detail.

Eurasian Teal are our smallest duck here in the UK but oh so beautiful.
We then visited the Tal-y-Fan and Carneddua hides where we enjoyed super views of Teal through the telescopes and we were able to again enjoy the beautiful detail of all the plumage given such close up looks. There were lots of other beautiful ducks here to enjoy with Wigeon, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Pochard and Goldeneye all seen well on the lagoons. Common Snipe also really showed off on the islands in the lagoons and their gorgeous plumage was a delight to see in amazing detail through the Leica telescopes.
It was also great to share the history of RSPB Conwy with Derek and Yvonne an amazing story of industrial site devoid of birds and wildlife to the nature reserve we see today. Even on a damp November day we saw so many birds.
We headed back to the coffee shop and enjoyed a very welcome mug of hot chocolate before saying goodbye. A really lovely morning walk with so much to see – come and join us simply drop us a line and we can arrange everything.
