The Ptarmigan A Member Of The Grouse Family Found On Some Of The Highest Mountains In The UK

A male Ptarmigan surveys his world from high on a mountain - superb bird.
Ptarmigan are very special birds indeed, they look great, live in beautiful wild places, are tricky to find and they are vanishing sadly. These high altitude living grouse could sadly be lost as a British species if the climate continues to change rapidly. The Ptarmigan lives on the tops of some of our highest mountains in the Highlands of Scotland and their tundta like habitat could vanish if the climate continues to warm, this resulting in changes to the spares vegetation where the birds live, this could lead to Red Grouse competeing with the Ptarmigan this and the changes in habitat could see these beautiful birds vanish.

A female Ptarmigan creeps across the mountain top - so hard to spot.

We do see these beautiful Ptarmigan on our Birdwatching Trips tours in the Scottish Highlands and also on our very popular Finland and Arctic Norway tour where they can be seen from the roadside!
