Resplendent birding in Costa Rica
Resplendent birding in Costa Rica
We moved on to the highlands where we're staying in the valley of San Gerardo de Dota. Lots of new birds to see here but one main target species in mind: Resplendent Quetzal! Would we be lucky?
Resplendent Quetzal living up to its name
An early start saw us staring hard at a suitable tree bearing wild avocados, and in prime position we waited. We didn't have to wait long before in swooped a handsome male Resplendent Quetzal trailing its glorious train like a ribbon dancer at the Olympics. WOW, what a view! We've never had such clear frame-filling full bird-and-tail views before!
And it kept on getting better as we were rewarded with incredible views of four birds, including two full adult males in the tree at once. These birds really entertained us as they swooped to snatch the avocados which they ate whole and chased each other around the tree. What a morning!
More birding adventures still to come so do check back later for more.
